South
of the City of Cartago, as you are traveling along the Interamerican
Highway
through the mountain pass of the Macizo de la Muerte, the countryside
on
the easter side of the highway is El Guarco Canton.
If you have rented a 4WD car, you will enjoy many little side roads
along the way, where vacationers can pull off the main highway and hike
into the forests. Birdwatching is especially popular through this
region. Take warm
clothing, as temperatures in the mountain pass can get below freezing
at
times.
