Nicoya is the primary city on the Nicoya Peninsula. About a 1 hour
drive
from the Liberia airport, Nicoya is the crossroads leading to several
popular
surfing beach areas of the Guanacaste Pacific Coast, such as Nosara
Beach
and Samara Beach. A popular tourist destination is Ostional Wildlife
Refuge,
the largest nesting site in Costa Rica for Olive Ridley sea turtles.
The wetlands of the Tempisque River are home of millions of migratory
birds,
and many tourists come to the Palo Verde National Park for world class
birdwatching.
The Gulf of Nicoya has several islands, charter boat tours and sailing
are
popular activities.
A must-see on the Nicoya Peninsula is Barra Honda National Park, with a
campground and limestone caves to explore.
