Abangares
county extends from the Gulf of Nicoya up into the Tilaran Mountains
between
the Monteverde Clouforest and the Arenal Volcano Forest Reserve.
The town of Las Juntas is the municipalidad, or county seat, of
Abangares
Canton. A small county wedged between the famous Monteverde area and
the
Arenal Tilaran Mountains.
The Rio Abangares is a major tributary flowing into the Gulf of Nicoya
at the Culebra Estuary. Because of
its hotter climate, the salt flats in the coastal areas at the mouth of
this
river are used to economically produce table salt.
The
highlands of Abangares border between the Monteverde Cloudforest
Preserve
and the Lake Arenal Tilaran Forest Reserve. Visitors to the area will
find naturalist
guides, horseback riding tours, birdwatching and hiking.
