Golfito Canton Costa Rica
The municipalidad city of Golfito is a port town on the calm Golfito
Bay, on the inland side of the large Golfo Dulce. Golfito Canton also
extends
across the Gulf and covers the majority southern portion of the Osa
Peninsula
under its jurisdiction.
Surrounding by the Golfito
Wildlife Refuge and dense rainforests, the city is
best
known
for its Deposito Libre, or Free Port. Because residents can purchase
imported
goods duty-free, it is a popular weekend destination for locals and
expats.
Also the site of a planned future marina, Golfito enjoys boating and
sportfishing
tourism. Beach areas to the south of Golfito include Playa Zancudo and
Pavones,
famous for their surfing and laid-back atmosphere.
The county also extends to the southernmost coastal beaches of Costa
Rica,
past Punta Burica and into the Guaymi Indigenous Reserve to Punta
Gordo.
On the southern portion of the Osa Peninsula, the town of Puerto
Jimenez
is a popular destination for surfers and adventure ecotourism,
providing
remote and rustic lodging immersed in the wildlife and nature setting
of
one of the most protected pieces of rainforest in the world.
