Bordered
on the south by the Rio Toro and the north by the Rio Madre de Dios,
Matina
Canton is primarily lowland rainforests and protected wetlands region.
The
main road or highway passes through the center of the county,
paralleling
the old railroad tracks.
Most of this region is protected area, with portions of Barbilla
National
Park, the Cabecar indian reservations and the Pacuare Matina forest
reserves.
Matina is a popular location to catch a boat taxi to tour the inland
navigable canals of the Caribbean Coast.
