While
Alajuela Province is perhaps best known as a suburban area of San Jose and
home of the Juan Santamaria International airport, the great majority of
the Province to the north of the city is rural rolling hills and mountains.
Some of the most famous travel destinations in Costa Rica are in Alajuela Province, including Arenal Volcano,
Poas Volcano, Juan Castro Blanco National Park, and the Cano Negro Wildlife
Refuge.
With a well developed highway infrastructure extending into the far northern
part of the country, Alajuela Province is a popular vacation destination.
Lodging varies from large chain hotels to intimate luxury B&Bs.
Tourism activities include waterfalls, canopy tours, volcanoes, birdwatching, and nature guides.
