Reference Map of Heredia Province Costa Rica
While
Heredia Province is perhaps best known as a northern suburban area of the
capital city of San Jose, the great majority of Heredia Province lies in
the northern lowlands and rainforests of the Sarapiqui region, bordering
Nicaragua and the San Juan River Basin.
Some of the most famous travel destinations in Heredia Costa Rica are the
Barva Volcano and Braulio Carrillo National Park. The Sarapiqui River is
born on the slopes of the Barva and Poas Volcanoes, and quickly becomes much
larger, offering some of Costa Rica's finest locations for whitewater rafting
and kayaking.
Downstream (north) of the town of Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui, the river is
calm, wide and navigable. Tourist activities include wildlife excursions
and birdwatching in this dense rainforest setting.
The
Organization for Tropical Studies operates the La Selva Biological Station
on the northern end of Braulio Carrillo National Park, offering day visits
and overnight camping with naturalist tour guides.
Costa Rica's National University has its campus near Heredia City, and the
InBio Park National Biodiversity Institute is located in Santo Domingo de
Heredia.
In the highlands areas of Heredia Province, tourism includes coffee plantation
tours and Spanish language schools combined with adventure and nature tours.
Many of these include bed and breakfasts, small hotels, and homestay with
Costa Rican families.
