Often
labeled as Highway 1 on maps, the primary route through Costa Rica is
locally
known as the Carretera InterAmericana, the Inter-American Highway, or
the Pan-American Highway.
Running roughly north-south, this highway is the major supply route
through
the Central American countries. It crosses through many of Costa Rica's
largest
cities, such as San Jose, Cartago, Liberia and San Isidro de El
General.
The InterAmerican highway also connects the larger cities to the more
rural
Guanacaste region, some of the most popular beaches and vacation
destinations
in the country.
On road maps, the major paved highways have been numbered, but the
locals do not actually call the highways by that. The Tico
cultural tradition is to think
of roads as a pathway to a DESTINATION. In one direction, the road
leads
to Town A. In the other direction, the road leads to Town B.
Some of the other major routes are the Guapiles Highway, which carries
the majority of traffic heading to the Caribbean Coast through a city
named
Guapiles. The Costanera (or Coastal Highway) carries traffic along the
Central
and Southern Pacific Coast. This southern highway has provided better
travel
access to the country's southern Pacific beach areas.
